The beginnings of tourism in Schwarzsee

Crucial for the start of tourism in Schwarzsee was not the magnificent mountain landscape or the pretty mountain lake. Instead the spas were what lured the first visitors to the region.

For centuries Schwarzsee remained undiscovered. Only around 1750 the sublimity of the Alps started to be discovered. Educated people hiked through the mountains and reported on the region.

In 1717 Peter Schuwey discovered a sulphur spring; in 1784 he erected the first bath house there. In this way Schwarzsee gradually became known in wider circles. In 1804 a landslide completely destroyed the bath house and in 1810 the brothers Jakob and Franz Blanc replaced it with a new building. Today Hotel Bad stands in this place. 90 years from then Hotel Gypsera was erected, whose name reflects the local gypsum deposits. In 1913 a third hotel followed: Hotel Spitzfluh.

In 1946 the ski lift Gypsera-Riggisalp started to operate. The development of the ski area Schwyberg took place in 1976: a chairlift and two ski lifts were erected.

In 1996 the yet unspoiled Brecca abyss entered the federal inventory for landscapes and natural monuments that are worthy of conservation, in order to give this unique landscape the protection that it deserves.

Today Schwarzsee is a popular destination and a local holiday area. Tourism has become a backbone of the local economy.
On the occasion of the foundation of the "Verkehrsverein Schwarzsee" association in October 1937 "Freiburger Nachrichten" newspaper reports:

"Schwarzsee - the dear and small Schwarzsee known to many, for sure, the Sleeping Beauty of our holiday resorts, where nature presents itself to the visitor in prodigal abundance. On verdant meadows and tuneful pastures, in the nearby mountain's flower and rock garden, in the still village on the lake, on a rolling boat or at the splashing waterfall, at the gurgling rock brook or on the sunny height he finds tranquility and peace, relaxation and power. Visitors from near and far cannot forget this place and bring new friends to our mountain valley."
