 Welcome to all visitors to Auried. A nature trail takes you through the reserve and lookouts allow you to follow the spectacle of nature without disturbing. The magnificent nature reserve is located in a one-time meadow of River Saane. In 1964 the natural dynamics of the Saane were fundamentally disturbed by the erection of Schiffenen dam and by the canalisation of the river behind the dam. The former meadow landscape was transformed into agricultural land.

This utilization created a variety of structures such as sandbanks, gravelbanks and ponds, which naturally are present in meadow landscapes. Pioneering plants and animals inhabited those open expanses right away. The gravel pit has thus adopted the role of an artificial substitute meadow landscape. Pro Natura bought the pit in 1981 and put it under conservation.
Today Auried is a nature reserve of national significance. It hosts 8 kinds of amphibians and counts as an important procreation site, hibernation site and a stop-over for a variety of birds. The biotope diversity is maintained through a concept of care, which counters the emergence of shrubs and the consecutive evolution of woods.  Auried (307 KB)
